SAN DIEGO YOUNG MARINES

Thank you for inquiring about our Young Marine Program.  The San Diego Young Marines are part of a national Young Marine organization. We are an all-volunteer program that relies on the parents and families to help keep our program running year round. We are a 501c3 non-profit organization, sponsored by the Marine Corps League. Our primary mission is to positively impact America's future by providing quality youth development programs for boys and girls that nurtures and develops its members into responsible citizens who enjoy and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

Our motto: “Strengthening the lives of America’s youth.”

(It is sometimes misunderstood; we are not a disciplinary or scared straight type of program. Our staff is not trained or qualified to manage troubled youth. Our program was not designed to “fix” or “straighten out” children with disciplinary, drug or emotional issues. We are also not a “camp” like ones held during summer months or school breaks.)

The Young Marines take girls and boys from the age of 8 to 18. Before earning the right to be called a Young Marine, each child must go through 9 weeks (weekends) of boot camp 7:45-2:00 pm. It is here that they will learn the history of the program, how to push themselves and each other physically, learn to work as a unit, drill, follow verbal commands, and learn self-discipline and what it means to be a Young Marine. They will see that they can do much more than they ever thought they were capable of.  If they are able to pass recruit training (boot camp), they will graduate and become a San Diego Young Marine!!  They will then meet twice per month on Saturdays from 7:45-1:00 pm and one event day per month as well.

A parent meeting will be held on February 18th from 8:00 – 11:00 sharp.  The location is 5665 Eastgate Dr. San Diego CA 92121.  At this time we will introduce the parents and recruits to the Young Marine Program and its staff, collect registration fees, enrollment packets and give information about how to prepare for the upcoming boot camp. First day of camp is March 4th !

Prior to the meeting an enrollment packet will need to be completed, including a current physical exam. This is urgent and your recruit will not be allowed to attend the first day of boot camp without a current physical. This packet can be found on our website: www.SanDiegoYoungMarines.org

We urge you to fill out this packet as soon as possible as it is very long.  All information must be filled out online, then printed.  We do not want hand written forms as they are very difficult to interpret. It is important the all information is easily read so it is entered into the national database correctly and our Safety Officer can easily read any emergency contact information.  Bring completed packet to the parent meeting along with a $250 registration fee. (Checks payable to SDYM) Please do not bring incomplete packets.

The registration fee will cover their uniform blouse, trousers, cover, 2 Young Marine T-Shirts, belt, boot bands, and a few other items.  It also covers the registration costs and helps to support activities that include all Young Marines such as our annual ball, USS Midway overnight trip, camping etc. (Each Young Marine will be responsible for their boots, cartridge belt and canteen. We will have more information about these items at the parent meeting.

Thank you again for inquiring about our program.  We are looking forward to meeting the parents and new recruits and expanding our tradition of excellence with the San Diego Young Marines!
